Question: What year and where was my Les Paul made?
I have a Gibson Les Paul Special that I have no history on and am having trouble finding out what year and where it was manufactured. I think it is probably from he 90′s but I have no way of confirming that since I’m having difficulties navigating Gibson’s serial number lookup. The serial number is 03460538, and it has”Made in the USA” stamped on the back of the headstock right below the serial number. It has 2 p90s (or p100s) that I think are original. Can anybody help with this? Was there some kind of name given to this model, like Les Paul Classic or something of the ilk? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here is the most comprehensive Gibson serial/dating information site of which I am aware:

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html#serial

Using the info below from that site, you should be able to figure the year it was made. Below is information as well on the manufacturing plants.

“Gibson Serial Numbers, 1977 to present.

All models, 8 digit number impressed in back top of peghead in the following format:

YY (1st and 5th digit) = year
DDD (digits 2-4) = day of the year,
001=Jan 1st, 365=Dec 31st.
NNN (digits 6-8) = rank of instrument for that day.
Example: 80012005 = 5th instrument made in Kalamazoo
on the first day of 1982.

Note all Kalamazoo made instruments (1977-1984) and Bozeman (1989-present) are numbered beginning with 001 each day. Instruments made at Nashville are numbered beginning with 500 each day.”

The model name is the Les Paul Special (“Special” vs. “Classic”) Good luck!

Question: Is cast iron cookware that is made in China safe?
I love using the cast iron pans I have and I want to buy some more but I am concerned as to whether the ones from China could have something unsafe in the manufacturing process. I know you’re probably thinking, “just buy made in the USA”. I would do that but the one I really want is only available from China. I think cast iron is always just cast iron with nothing added, but I’m not sure. Please, no surmising, I can do that but it doesn’t work. So please respond only if you know what you’re talking about. Thank you.

Question: What exactly makes American made products higher quality?
In an era of regulation just about everything is standardized from one thing to the next. Do American workers add an extra ingredient called ‘love’ to their work? I purchased a power washer which is made in the USA, the entire box was covered in American flags and everywhere on the product is stamped “Made In The USA” I didn’t mind paying more for it knowing it was going to be better quality than those Asian ones and I’d rather keep the jobs here so on and so forth, but after only a few uses with the washer (less than 5) the machine is less than a year old, it already stopped working and needed to be serviced. So.. I know its a fallacy to say all American made products are bad based on one, but why pay more for something if your not even getting better quality?

Name the company, because I looked for one like you described and couldn’t find it. There are products out there with the label “made in america” but really aren’t.

Question: About American flags made in countries other than the U.S.?
Hi there, as of today (July 4th), I’ve encountered a very interesting problem. In the United States, people are supposed to raise American flags made in the U.S. only. Let’s say, if someone got caught raising an American flag “made in China”, legally speaking, what will happen to this person ?

Answer:

Answer by DonPedro
Just don’t buy flags that have the made in China tag on them.

Question: Would you buy an American made (or grown) product if it were 20% more expensive than an import?
Do you shop only based on the price, or do you try to buy goods made in your own country? What does “Made in the USA” mean to you, better quality, higher price, better for the economy?

Some where on a USA made knife stamped into the blade should be “USA” if it was made here. If not throw it out I wouldn’t buy it. too many nock offs.

Question: Are all Fender Standard Telecasters made outside the US?
I’m on the verge of purchasing what I think is a Fender American Telecaster for $ 500. This is a hell of a bargain, and the guitar plays and sounds great, but I want to make sure it really is what I think it is, namely this:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_fender_american_telecaster_electric_guitar?full_sku=101019628

The guitar says “Made in USA” under the Fender logo on the headstock, but I’m worried because I’m not sure if the cheaper Telecasters, like this one:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_fender_standard_telecaster_electric_guitar?full_sku=516035%2e037

Might also come from the USA.

So, does saying USA on the headstock mean it’s definitely an American Tele? Or would I risk getting swindled by someone who’s passing off the Standard as American? Is there any way to check 100% to make sure it’s an American Tele and not a Standard?

Answer:

Answer by Slash102
if it says made in USA on the headstock, its more than likely its american, unless they just changed the neck, to make sure its genuine, write down the serial number, call fender and tell them to look it up in their computers, they can tell u the truth:) If it is american, pounce on it like a tiger cause thats one sweet deal!
